Writing Joomla articles

Its delightfully easy to quickly edit articles on the Joomla CMS by logging in and accessing one of the available editors or the default TinyMCE.

If you are creating a significant article from scratch, there are a few significant problems:

  1. TinyMCE can feel rather cramped.
  2. Saving closes the editor so its hard to save as you go.
  3. There is no workflow so you can't save versions, revert etc.
  4. The HTML is packed so when editing the HTML any whitespace or layout gets lost between edits.
  5. Its hard to see the likely effect of some template style sheets
To address these issues, use JoomlaFCK, a highly rated editor that is specifically customised for Joomla.

JoomlaFCK allows full screen editing, has a nice html layout feature and includes a neat facility for seeing the article in the appropriate style.

There is still nothing in the way of saving versions as you go or workflow control or management of the default timeouts (the latter is only a problem if you are editing from the backend). but this is a good step forwards.

For version control there is Egxact which, while not well used, appears to offer the basic requirements and the source is provided.
For workflow, there is nothing available but user access control in conjunction with version control may suffice.
